To God's Will Completely Given

To God's will completely given,

Lies the Child so trustfully.

Resting in the Father's purpose,

Helpless though He seems to be.

Your whole being dedicated

God's good pleasure to fulfill,

So the splendor of His purpose

Shines through your surrendered will.

Little Child, so humbly trustful,

"All is well," to us You say:

"For all comes from God the Father,

Wisely He directs my way.

Teach me Jesus, to be trustful

In my Father's will to rest,

As He guides, corrects and trains me

With me deals as He sees best.

Little Jesus, You have shown me

That God's will is wise and kind.

In His heart I will find refuge,

For Your Father now is mine.

Galatians 6

Doing Good to All

 1Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. 2Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4Each one should test his own actions. Then he can take pride in himself, without comparing himself to somebody else, 5for each one should carry his own load. 6Anyone who receives instruction in the word must share all good things with his instructor. 7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Not Circumcision but a New Creation

 11See what large letters I use as I write to you with my own hand! 12Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to compel you to be circumcised. The only reason they do this is to avoid being persecuted for the cross of Christ. 13Not even those who are circumcised obey the law, yet they want you to be circumcised that they may boast about your flesh. 14May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 15Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is a new creation. 16Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule, even to the Israel of God. 17Finally, let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. 18The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.

God's promise to those who love Him

and seek His will

"Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. "

1 John 5:14-15

Old Testament Prophecy:  "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light;  on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."   Isaiah 9:2

New Testament Fulfillment:  "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.  And the light shines in the darkness..." John 1:4-5

A few years before our original thirteen states adopted the new constitution in 1787, Alexander Fraser Tyler, a Scottish history professor at the University of Edinburgh, had this to say about the fall of the Athenian Republic some 2,000 years earlier: "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over lousy fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average of the world’s great civilizations before they decline has been 200 years. These nations have progressed in this sequence: 'During those 200 years, those nations always progressed through the following sequence:

1. from bondage to spiritual faith;

2. from spiritual faith to great courage;

3. from courage to liberty;

4. from liberty to abundance;

5. from abundance to complacency;

6. from complacency to apathy;

7. from apathy to dependence;

8. from dependence back into bondage."

Ezekiel 12: 21-29 NIV

 21 The word of the LORD came to me: 22 "Son of man, what is this proverb you have in the land of Israel: 'The days go by and every vision comes to nothing'? 23 Say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am going to put an end to this proverb, and they will no longer quote it in Israel.' Say to them, 'The days are near when every vision will be fulfilled. 24 For there will be no more false visions or flattering divinations among the people of Israel. 25 But I the LORD will speak what I will, and it shall be fulfilled without delay. For in your days, you rebellious house, I will fulfill whatever I say, declares the Sovereign LORD.' "  26 The word of the LORD came to me: 27 "Son of man, the house of Israel is saying, 'The vision he sees is for many years from now, and he prophesies about the distant future.'

 28 "Therefore say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: None of my words will be delayed any longer; whatever I say will be fulfilled, declares the Sovereign LORD.' "

Habakkuk 1:5

[ The Lord 's Answer ] "Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.

 "God reigns over the nations!" (Psalms 47:8) Throughout history He used good and bad rulers to discipline and bless His people -- always lovingly calling them back to Himself. Some recognized His hand of love, accepted His wise warnings and were blessed in His loving presence. Others were blind and deaf to His truths and sovereignty. The same is true today for human nature doesn't change much. If we focus on our wonderful King, not on the human agents, He will surely use everything that happens to keep us alert, teach us His Word, strengthen our faith and draw us closer to Himself.   An Old Testament king gave us a wonderful model prayer. When a "great multitude" of enemy troops threatened the freedom of God's people, Jehoshophat simply turned His eyes and heart to His faithful Lord and expressed his faith:

     “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? ... O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”  (2 Chronicles 20:6, 12)

     God answered in a wonderful way! He always does, though usually the victory is less dramatic. How blessed we are to know Him at a time such as this!

God looks for faith and obedience,

not great leaders

"And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. And therefore 'it was accounted to him for righteousness.'” Romans 4:19-22

"Jesus said to them, '...if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”  Matthew 17:20-21

Called by God

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed,

for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua  1:9

Called of Jesus Christ to separation, obedience and ministry

"Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
       "To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ."
Romans 1:1-7

"To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ: Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you." Jude 1-2

"Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God...  to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord...." 1 Corinthians 1:1-2

Called to fellowship with Jesus Christ, our Lord

"I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God  which was given to you by Christ Jesus, that you were enriched in everything by Him in all utterance and all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord."  1 Corinthians 1:4-9

Called to walk a narrow way with Him

"Then one said to Him, 'Lord, are there few who are saved?'

      "And He said to them, 'Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open for us,’ and He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know you, where you are from,’ then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets.’

      "But He will say, ‘I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity.’ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth...."

Luke 13:23-28

Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves."

Matthew 7:13-15

Called to obey Him

“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do the things which I say?   Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 'He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell.” Luke 6:46-49

Called to see Jesus as the source of our wisdom and power

"...we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men." 1 Corinthians 1:23-24

Called to share His victory over the spiritual forces of evil

“The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast.  These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”  Revelation 17:12-14

Called to share His holiness and glory

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified." Romans 8:28-30

But few respond to His call with true faith

"... many are called, but few chosen.

Matthew 20:12,  22:14

“Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience." Luke 8:11-15

"Hold fast the pattern of  sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who wells in us. This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me..." 2 Timothy 1:13-15

"...wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck..." 1 Timothy 1:18

"You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules."  2 Timothy 2:3-5

"Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’

      "Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.

      "Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.

     "Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming."  Matthew 25:1-13

Only by His grace can anyone win the price

"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it. " 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Called to Total Commitment

“He said to him, 'Follow Me.' So he arose and followed Him." Matthew 9:9

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." John 10:27

"If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word...." John 14:23

"'We ought to obey God rather than men.'" Acts 5:29

"Jesus said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment."

Matthew 22:37-38

"...whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it..."  Luke 14:27-28

“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." Matthew 16:24-25

"I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him..."

Philippians 3:8-11

"For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain."

Philippians 1:21-22

We belong to Him!

"...you are not your own.... For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s." 1 Corinthians 6:18-20

"For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s." Romans 14:8

"...present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.... Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good."
Romans 12:1-2, 9

"Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? ' If anyone 'defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are." 1 Corinthians 3:16-17

"Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit." Ephesians 2:19-22

"You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men."
1 Corinthians 7:23

".. we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. ”  Acts 4:19

"If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory." Colossians 3:1-4

"... those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." Romans 8:1-7

“'Come out from among them and be separate,' says the Lord. 'Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.”  2 Corinthians 6:14-18

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Matthew 11:28-30

"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it." 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

2 Corinthians 1:10-24 (New International Version)

10He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

 12Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God's grace. 13For we do not write you anything you cannot read or understand. And I hope that, 14as you have understood us in part, you will come to understand fully that you can boast of us just as we will boast of you in the day of the Lord Jesus.

 15Because I was confident of this, I planned to visit you first so that you might benefit twice. 16I planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way to Judea. 17When I planned this, did I do it lightly? Or do I make my plans in a worldly manner so that in the same breath I say, "Yes, yes" and "No, no"?

 18But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not "Yes" and "No." 19For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by me and Silas and Timothy, was not "Yes" and "No," but in him it has always been "Yes." 20For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God. 21Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, 22set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

 23I call God as my witness that it was in order to spare you that I did not return to Corinth. 24Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.

Matthew 12:18
"Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations.

2 Corinthians 2:4-6 NIV

4For I wrote you out of great distress and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to grieve you but to let you know the depth of my love for you. Forgiveness for the Sinner.  5If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you, to some extent—not to put it too severely. 6The punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient for him.

2 Corinthians 2:10-11 NIV

10If you forgive anyone, I also forgive him. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.

2 Corinthians 3:17 (New International Version)

17Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

2 Corinthians 8:8 (New International Version)

 8I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others.

2 Corinthians 8:10-18 (New International Version)

 10And here is my advice about what is best for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. 11Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have.  13Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. 14At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality, 15as it is written: "He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little."

Titus Sent to Corinth

 16I thank God, who put into the heart of Titus the same concern I have for you. 17For Titus not only welcomed our appeal, but he is coming to you with much enthusiasm and on his own initiative. 18And we are sending along with him the brother who is praised by all the churches for his service to the gospel.

2 Corinthians 9

 1There is no need for me to write to you about this service to the saints. 2For I know your eagerness to help, and I have been boasting about it to the Macedonians, telling them that since last year you in Achaia were ready to give; and your enthusiasm has stirred most of them to action. 3But I am sending the brothers in order that our boasting about you in this matter should not prove hollow, but that you may be ready, as I said you would be. 4For if any Macedonians come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to say anything about you—would be ashamed of having been so confident. 5So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given.

Sowing Generously

 6Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9As it is written:   "He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever."10Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.  12This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 13Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 14And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 15Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

2 Corinthians 10:12-18 (New International Version)

 12We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 13We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the field God has assigned to us, a field that reaches even to you. 14We are not going too far in our boasting, as would be the case if we had not come to you, for we did get as far as you with the gospel of Christ. 15Neither do we go beyond our limits by boasting of work done by others.[a] Our hope is that, as your faith continues to grow, our area of activity among you will greatly expand, 16so that we can preach the gospel in the regions beyond you. For we do not want to boast about work already done in another man's territory. 17But, "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."[b] 18For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.

Psalm 17

A prayer of David.

 1 Hear, O LORD, my righteous plea;
       listen to my cry.
       Give ear to my prayer—
       it does not rise from deceitful lips.

 2 May my vindication come from you;
       may your eyes see what is right.

 3 Though you probe my heart and examine me at night,
       though you test me, you will find nothing;
       I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.

 4 As for the deeds of men—
       by the word of your lips
       I have kept myself
       from the ways of the violent.

 5 My steps have held to your paths;
       my feet have not slipped.

 6 I call on you, O God, for you will answer me;
       give ear to me and hear my prayer.

 7 Show the wonder of your great love,
       you who save by your right hand
       those who take refuge in you from their foes.

 8 Keep me as the apple of your eye;
       hide me in the shadow of your wings

 9 from the wicked who assail me,
       from my mortal enemies who surround me.

 10 They close up their callous hearts,
       and their mouths speak with arrogance.

 11 They have tracked me down, they now surround me,
       with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground.

 12 They are like a lion hungry for prey,
       like a great lion crouching in cover.

 13 Rise up, O LORD, confront them, bring them down;
       rescue me from the wicked by your sword.

 14 O LORD, by your hand save me from such men,
       from men of this world whose reward is in this life.
       You still the hunger of those you cherish;
       their sons have plenty,
       and they store up wealth for their children.

 15 And I—in righteousness I will see your face;

Who is our God

Psalm 105

 1 Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name;
       make known among the nations what he has done.

 2 Sing to him, sing praise to him;
       tell of all his wonderful acts.

 3 Glory in his holy name;
       let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice.

 4 Look to the LORD and his strength;
       seek his face always.

 5 Remember the wonders he has done,
       his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,

 6 O descendants of Abraham his servant,
       O sons of Jacob, his chosen ones.

 7 He is the LORD our God;
       his judgments are in all the earth.

 8 He remembers his covenant forever,
       the word he commanded, for a thousand generations,

 9 the covenant he made with Abraham,
       the oath he swore to Isaac.

 10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,
       to Israel as an everlasting covenant:

 11 "To you I will give the land of Canaan
       as the portion you will inherit."

 12 When they were but few in number,
       few indeed, and strangers in it,

 13 they wandered from nation to nation,
       from one kingdom to another.

 14 He allowed no one to oppress them;
       for their sake he rebuked kings:

 15 "Do not touch my anointed ones;
       do my prophets no harm."

 16 He called down famine on the land
       and destroyed all their supplies of food;

 17 and he sent a man before them—
       Joseph, sold as a slave.

 18 They bruised his feet with shackles,
       his neck was put in irons,

 19 till what he foretold came to pass,
       till the word of the LORD proved him true.

 20 The king sent and released him,
       the ruler of peoples set him free.

 21 He made him master of his household,
       ruler over all he possessed,

 22 to instruct his princes as he pleased
       and teach his elders wisdom.

 23 Then Israel entered Egypt;
       Jacob lived as an alien in the land of Ham.

 24 The LORD made his people very fruitful;
       he made them too numerous for their foes,

 25 whose hearts he turned to hate his people,
       to conspire against his servants.

 26 He sent Moses his servant,
       and Aaron, whom he had chosen.

 27 They performed his miraculous signs among them,
       his wonders in the land of Ham.

 28 He sent darkness and made the land dark—
       for had they not rebelled against his words?

 29 He turned their waters into blood,
       causing their fish to die.

 30 Their land teemed with frogs,
       which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers.

 31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies,
       and gnats throughout their country.

 32 He turned their rain into hail,
       with lightning throughout their land;

 33 he struck down their vines and fig trees
       and shattered the trees of their country.

 34 He spoke, and the locusts came,
       grasshoppers without number;

 35 they ate up every green thing in their land,
       ate up the produce of their soil.

 36 Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land,
       the first fruits of all their manhood.

 37 He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold,
       and from among their tribes no one faltered.

 38 Egypt was glad when they left,
       because dread of Israel had fallen on them.

 39 He spread out a cloud as a covering,
       and a fire to give light at night.

 40 They asked, and he brought them quail
       and satisfied them with the bread of heaven.

 41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out;
       like a river it flowed in the desert.

 42 For he remembered his holy promise
       given to his servant Abraham.

 43 He brought out his people with rejoicing,
       his chosen ones with shouts of joy;

 44 he gave them the lands of the nations,
       and they fell heir to what others had toiled for-

 45 that they might keep his precepts
       and observe his laws.
       Praise the LORD.

Psalm 113 (New International Version)

Psalm 113

 1 Praise the LORD.
       Praise, O servants of the LORD,
       praise the name of the LORD.

 2 Let the name of the LORD be praised,
       both now and forevermore.

 3 From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
       the name of the LORD is to be praised.

 4 The LORD is exalted over all the nations,
       his glory above the heavens.

 5 Who is like the LORD our God,
       the One who sits enthroned on high,

 6 who stoops down to look
       on the heavens and the earth?

 7 He raises the poor from the dust
       and lifts the needy from the ash heap;

 8 he seats them with princes,
       with the princes of their people.

 9 He settles the barren woman in her home
       as a happy mother of children.
       Praise the LORD.

Isaiah 40:

Comfort for God's People

 1 Comfort, comfort my people,
       says your God.

 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem,
       and proclaim to her
       that her hard service has been completed,
       that her sin has been paid for,
       that she has received from the LORD's hand
       double for all her sins.

 3 A voice of one calling:
       "In the desert prepare
       the way for the LORD
;
       make straight in the wilderness
       a highway for our God.

 4 Every valley shall be raised up,
       every mountain and hill made low;
       the rough ground shall become level,
       the rugged places a plain.

 5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed,
       and all mankind together will see it.
       For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

 6 A voice says, "Cry out."
       And I said, "What shall I cry?"
       "All men are like grass,
       and all their glory is like the flowers of the field.

 7 The grass withers and the flowers fall,
       because the breath of the LORD blows on them.
       Surely the people are grass.

 8 The grass withers and the flowers fall,
       but the word of our God stands forever."

 9 You who bring good tidings to Zion,
       go up on a high mountain.
       You who bring good tidings to Jerusalem,

       lift up your voice with a shout,
       lift it up, do not be afraid;
       say to the towns of Judah,
       "Here is your God!"

 10 See, the Sovereign LORD comes with power,
       and his arm rules for him.
       See, his reward is with him,
       and his recompense accompanies him.

 11 He tends his flock like a shepherd:
       He gathers the lambs in his arms
       and carries them close to his heart;
       he gently leads those that have young.

 12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of

       his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked

       off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in

       a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales

       and the hills in a balance?

 13 Who has understood the mind [d] of the LORD,
       or instructed him as his counselor?

 14 Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him,
       and who taught him the right way?
       Who was it that taught him knowledge
       or showed him the path of understanding?

 15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket;
       they are regarded as dust on the scales;
       he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.

 16 Lebanon is not sufficient for altar fires,
       nor its animals enough for burnt offerings.

 17 Before him all the nations are as nothing;
       they are regarded by him as worthless
       and less than nothing.

 18 To whom, then, will you compare God?
       What image will you compare him to?

 19 As for an idol, a craftsman casts it,
       and a goldsmith overlays it with gold
       and fashions silver chains for it.

 20 A man too poor to present such an offering
       selects wood that will not rot.
       He looks for a skilled craftsman
       to set up an idol that will not topple.

 21 Do you not know?
       Have you not heard?
       Has it not been told you from the beginning?
       Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

 22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth,
       and its people are like grasshoppers.
       He stretches out the heavens like a canopy,
       and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

 23 He brings princes to naught
       and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.

 24 No sooner are they planted,
       no sooner are they sown,
       no sooner do they take root in the ground,
       than he blows on them and they wither,
       and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.

 25 "To whom will you compare me?
       Or who is my equal?" says the Holy One.

 26 Lift your eyes and look to the heavens:
       Who created all these?
       He who brings out the starry host one by one,
       and calls them each by name.
       Because of his great power and mighty strength,
       not one of them is missing.

 27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
       and complain, O Israel,
       "My way is hidden from the LORD;
       my cause is disregarded by my God"?

 28 Do you not know?
       Have you not heard?
       The LORD is the everlasting God,
       the Creator of the ends of the earth.
       He will not grow tired or weary,
       and his understanding no one can fathom.

 29 He gives strength to the weary
       and increases the power of the weak.

 30 Even youths grow tired and weary,
       and young men stumble and fall;

 31 but those who hope in the LORD
       will renew their strength.
       They will soar on wings like eagles;
       they will run and not grow weary,
       they will walk and not be faint.
